Soaking meat necessary?

Great informative site! Great pictures and excellent tutorial! Will be sure to recommend this site to others.

I have some deer meat in my big cooler (shot and butchered yesterday). Friends of mine say they've always soaked their meat in the sink in cool water with salt in it. Does that really help? Does it make it more tender or does it just draw out blood, hoping for a "non gamey" taste?

And input on that?
